Bead + Button Jewelry
Four day workshop: Monday-Thursday
Hours: 10:00am-3:00pm
Date: 7/20/2009 – 7/23/2009

This class is in the Summer of Making program.

In this hands-on class, students will learn and practice a range of beading, jewelry-making and embellishment techniques, including wirework, stringing, weaving, knotting, gluing, hand-sewing, and other craft methods. Bring in your own favorite pieces to design around, complementing them with vintage and new beads, buttons, findings, chain, fabric, and other materials from Susan’s collection. Aside from the nuts and bolts of practical making, we’ll focus on color, balance, arrangements, and intuitive design – creating a collection of jewelry and other crafts that bring your treasures to life. With four days to work together, we’ll create a collection of instant favorites for gifts or for yourself, while building a strong foundation for designing future projects with your new skills. The projects we create will reflect each student’s personal sense of style and other favorite elements – instead of a cookie-cutter approach, each designer will enjoy the flexibility to focus on what he or she prefers.

Instructor: Susan Beal is a jewelry designer, crafter, and writer in Portland. Shes the author of Button It Up and Bead Simple, and co-wrote Super Crafty with her partners in the PDX Super Crafty collective. Susan also writes for CRAFT:, CraftStylish, Stitch, BUST, ReadyMade, and other magazines, and has contributed to Handmade Nation, The Pillow Book, Sweater Surgery, Tease, Making Stuff, The Crafter Culture Handbook, Get Crafty, Offbeat Bride, and the upcoming Applique Your Way and Craft Corps. She is currently working on two new books due out next year.
